Aside from the fact it will be the first tablet to use NVIDIA’s new quad-core Tegra 3 processor, the Asus Transformer Prime offers a truly “transformable” design with the optional keyboard dock. When the keyboard is docked, the Transformer Prime opens and closes like a laptop – very cool. The Tranformer Prime sports an impressive list of specs too:

Transformer Prime has a sleek profile, 8.3mm, with a large 10.1 inch screen, a bit larger than the iPad 2 (9.7 inch). It will come in two colors, Amethyst Gray and Champagne Gold, colors usually associated with high end devices. Even though Asus has replaced the plastic back from earlier models with nice clean aluminum, they managed to keep the overall weight down  at just 1.29 lbs. With the optional dock, the entire package will weigh in at a little over 2 pounds.

This baby has a 1.2 megapixel camera in front, and an 8 megapixel camera in back, with an remarkably large F2.4 aperture capable of recording 1080p video. The 8 megapixal camera uses a back-illuminated sensor (BIS), which captures more light than traditional sensors. That’s a pretty serious camera to put on a computer tablet.

The display Asus is using has a full featured 1280 x 800 resolution with Super IPS+ engineering, same as with the iPads and iPhone 4 displays.  It has superb color processing, and an extraordinary 178 degree view angle. The wide degree view angle is handy for viewing by several people at once, and especially nice when you want to show off your new toy to your jealous friends. IPS + refers to the 1.5x brighter display you can switch to when outdoors. Meaning it will be easier to read, and see images on the display. Good move Asus. All that display is protected by scatch resistant Gorilla Glass.

When Asus announced it was releasing a tablet with a quad-four processor, it had game developers lining up to produce game versions optimized for the Tegra 3 chip. In theory, you should be capable of playing games with equivalent graphics and speed of high-end gaming consoles. It will be exciting to see what the gaming world brings forth.

The shipping date for the Asus Transformer Prime is supposed to be sometime in December, we will see. That would be the perfect time to do it, right before the holiday season. One thing is positive, if the Transformer Prime lives up to the hype, we will have a new King-Of-The-Hill tablet on the way.
